BalrogThe Battle of the Peak by BenWootten BalrogThe Battle of the Peak by BenWootten
This my latest piece for the Weta NZ art print range, it has just gone on sale on their web site. It was a great thrill to get to paint this piece, to revisit this character after all this time, it seems so long ago that I was working with John Howe, to design this guy for the films and then sculpting the first collectible of him for the Weta range of figurines.

Wow! You feel the heat from this one from just looking at this piece, same kind of powerful heat you get from watching the Fellowship. Absolutely amazing work! Balrog is clearly the Daddy of the dark beasts that haunt Middle Earth. Where the Eagles and Shadowfax are clearly the Kings of the light.

You're welcom, :). Revisiting old creations is like meeting an old friend in a way, your hand and eyes remember everything, like starting a conversation like you've spoken just yesterday. I remember seeing him the first time and I was like "Wait, what's that?" Then I didn't care because he was just awesome. Me Dad was very impressed as well, being a huge LoTR fan (I think LoTR spurred him to go forward with being a Visual Effects Artist)

That is really cool. What does your dad do in the effects industry?

All I know is he does Visual Effects (He lives in Surrey near London, I'm in the East Midlands so I hardly see him :( ), but his skills are amazing, Rotoscoping, Live-action Effects and probably some digital effects as well, I've seen a clip where he's taken out an entire person out of a shot. And I know most of the films he has done such as Maleficent, Crimson Peak (he was very excited about this particular one), Gaurdians of the Galaxy and Age of Ultron.

Love it! What really stands out for me is the sheer physicality of everything!
I can feel how powerful the balrog is and I can hear the thundering crashes of the battle.

Marvelous! Always adored the Balrog in the Lord of the Rings movies and I own some figures myself, still my passion never decreased for this amazing creature and seeing this demon here in all his glory makes me want to watch the movies all over again.
But you worked with John Howe and even helped sculpting the first collectible aswell? Ho my, that is impressive... I mean, even more impressive then you already were, if that's even possible.
Good memories remembering working in this fantastic team, I guess?

I did work with John on the design of this guy, I did the design sculpts, the scannable sculpt for the digital creature in the films and I sculpted all of the first collectible piece, so I have a long relationship with this guy.:)
