Something a little different, here is a pencil sketch, possibly the first one I have ever posted here.

He reminds me of the Green Death from How to Train Your Dragon, only a lot more dangerous.

The use of simple line-art to add texture to the beast is well utilised and adds more form to an already impressive creature. you've been looking at a lot of Crocs and 'Gators lately  :3

Amazing pencil sketch! :) It's cool to see one of your traditional drawings as well as you digital work... maybe you could post some more like this sometime?

Oh, and I just wanted to ask... what kind of pencils were you using for this?  I've seen some artists recommend using one pencil (typically mid-range in hardness like HB or 2B), as they feel it is all one really needs when starting off, while others use a range of pencils with different hardnesses and lead widths for their drawings.

I use a blue animators pencil, I like the line and weight it provides. As my pencils are never more than part of process and not finished pieces I don't need the depth of tone softer leads give. Although I am tempted to try and produce finished pencils, so this may change.

Stoked you like it, thanks for the great feedback and good questions.

Huh, do you mean non-photo blue pencils?  I know that animators use those to make sketch lines that won't be picked up by the animation camera after they have inked it.  Those make a blue line, which doesn't look much like this drawing... so perhaps you mean some other kind of pencil?  Sorry for my newbie questions, but I really don't know too much about pencils other than the normal range of H through B I was given as a child. :)

Yeah, I've seen that artists specializing in pencil drawings tend to use the softer leads, while those focusing on sketching before digital painting tend to not to use them... thanks for the reply, Ben, and I'm looking forward to seeing any more pencil drawings you post here!!

I am indeed talking about those blue pencils that animators use for there rough sketches. I forgot to say that once I have scanned it in I desaturate the colour so it is grey scale.

I know this may sound strange but my favorite part is the tail that curves up in the background. Give the creature depth in the image. And man, do I love all the organic spiky-ness.
You should be really proud of this piece.

Now that is one of the coolest dragons you have posted thus far. I love the horns and the claws, especially how the claws aren't all that sharp, but can still do immense damage like those of a bear. it really adds to this dragon's power. the human for scale is a great touch.

Those claws have had a lot of wear, they do feel like they are for more than just weapons, a lot like a bears.

Stoked you like him:)

Indeed it does look like they would be of great use for digging and grabbing. I also love how you put a human in for scale. it makes him all the more terrifying.

I can't help but imagine this thing rubbing itself up against mountains (much like bears do with trees to scratch their backs), and leaving huge gouges and gashes in the rock face.
