Blue Dragon by BenWootten Blue Dragon by BenWootten
This is an interior illustration for the Pathfinder Chronicles: Dragons Revisited (OGL), Paizo Publishing, LLC.

Great opportunity to have a bash at re-imagining the core Dragons for the Paizo setting. I feel a great honor to have drawn creature that have been part of my mythology for 28 years now. Glee!!

So much color awesomeness! Only why would a dragon that brightly colored live in a desert?

What BenWootten said isn't necessarily true. Blue Dragons do possess the Hide skill in 3.5. I don't know about the others though. Anyway, the description under Blue Dragons in the 3.5 Monster Manual notes that, "their vibrant color makes blue dragons easy to spot in barren desert surroundings. However, they often burrow into the sand so only part of their heads are exposed. Blue dragons love to soar in the hot desert air, usually flying in the daytime when temperatures are highest. Some nearly match the color of the desert sky and use this coloration to their advantage. Blue dragons lair in vast underground caverns, where they also store their treasure. Although they collect anything that looks valuable, they are most fond of gems—especially sapphires."

In essence, some like to hide in the sand, blend in with the sky, or lair in underground caverns (i.e. buried ruins). Just a clarification. :)
