Lhazaar Principalities by BenWootten Lhazaar Principalities by BenWootten
This is an interior illo for the Eberron Campaign Guide 4e, recently released by Wotc.

This has a very similar feel to an earlier piece I did, the briefs were similiar and I didn't release how close the two were until I had finished and looked again, wierd.

Wait you drew this? That is amazing because I have this book! I have never played these games but I have always enjoyed reading the books and looking at the images. Really cool that you drew this. Now I know where the amazing art in the books comes from.

I'm using it to give the players a picture of their home port, so yeah, it does.

That is gorgeous--you did a fantastic job with the lighting, shading, color texture, and the design of the ships and the city!! :D

This is gorgeously done, although that harbor passage must be tricky to navigate.

What references did you use for the ships, especially the sails and the rigging?

I agree, there's something romantic about seaports and the wonder of the open seas.

Nice work here, this piece definitely makes you imagine this place and what it would be like to be there. The palms, the fairly busy waters, the bright city in the background...those things alone are enough to get your imagination going and to picture stories going on there
I think the only thing that bothers me a bit with this painting is the composition. It just feels a tad too centered for me. Was the aspect ratio of the picture given by the client? Because I really think that a slightly wider image with the ship a bit more off-centre would be really nice.
But that aside there is really not much to critique. You nicely hazed out parts, gave this depth, the ships are detailed, there's a sense of scale...and I definitely enjoy the second ship further in the background, the one on the left...it pulls the eye further in!

Well done :D

Thanks for the great feed back, I know what you mean, it was one of those things that bugged me a little as well, but I didn't really notice until too late.

This is absolutely beautiful, sir! I am absolutely in love with the architecture- did you use certain cultural references when making them? It reminds me of some of the architecture in old Constantinople (modern day Istanbul).

That is exactly the ref I used and the feel I wanted, exotic and really cosmopolitan, glad you get that from it. I really enjoyed this piece.

Phenomenal job on the perspective once again. You have an aptitude for drawing your viewers in and leave them wanting more. This piece is very easy on the eye and reminds me of a warm autumn day that would be great to go outdoors in. Your color choice is fantastic and it all flows together nicely.

Huge thansk, I love this place..but I am sure the beauty is a thin veneer masking the grimy nature of most big cities....adventures abound!

This is probably a third page (knowing wotc layout) but it looks very detailed and involved for a third page. Also the waves sing to my Dutch seafaring genes!

cheers,
