Actually, the original D&D monster spread was based 100% on mythological creatures and legends ... even the magic items and the spells were all taken from things like the original 1001 Arabian Nights ... the Otyugh, if I remember correctly (and I'm sure I'm not at the moment) is based on an Eastern creature of some sort, found in the kind of scrolls which depict demons and spirits of all sorts ...

Look through the archives of, er ... is it 'PinkTentacle.com' I think ... lots of Japanese and Asian oddities with quite a bit pulled from history and historical documents ...
