Otyugh by BenWootten Otyugh by BenWootten
Another old school classic from AD&D, makes as much sense now as it did 30 years ago :)

Interior art for Dungeon Denizens Revisited, Paizo Publishing

Just a little vindication the Otyugh that appears in the AD&D Monster Manual is described as "They stand on three thick legs that give them slow ground movement but enable them to pivot quickly."

So 3 legs is cool.

Actually, the original D&D monster spread was based 100% on mythological creatures and legends ... even the magic items and the spells were all taken from things like the original 1001 Arabian Nights ... the Otyugh, if I remember correctly (and I'm sure I'm not at the moment) is based on an Eastern creature of some sort, found in the kind of scrolls which depict demons and spirits of all sorts ...

Look through the archives of, er ... is it 'PinkTentacle.com' I think ... lots of Japanese and Asian oddities with quite a bit pulled from history and historical documents ...

I would so keep one of these under the sink. Certainly a cheaper garbage disposal.

I wish I had a little one of these living under my sink instead of a garbage disposal.

Ah, but the less sense a monster makes, the scarier it is.

so you are saying that scare is inversely proportional to sense....? That must be able to be expressed as a mathematical formulae....nerds anywhere ;)

In a way, though it does depend on how it doesn't make sense. Think of it like Eternal Darkness, the madness of how it shouldn't work causes one to become more afraid.

Haha. I remember that creature. The word "otyg" (in Swedish), means something unwanted. Could be a weed, or a bug. We also use it in the meaning of immoral behaviour.

I think the Otyugh might be one of the least imaginative creatures in the world of RPG:s. Still - nice illo!

Nice work. My one critique would be that the back leg is a little confusing. When you look at it as a three-legged beast, it seems like it is a short, round creature facing forward. However, at first, I thought it had four legs, and was longer like a lizard. Knowing me though, that's probably just I problem I have... ^^;
