This is an interior illustration for the Pathfinder Chronicles: Dragons Revisited (OGL), Paizo Publishing, LLC.

Great opportunity to have a bash at re-imagining the core Dragons for the Paizo setting. I feel a great honor to have drawn creature that have been part of my mythology for 28 years now. Glee!!

I love how your dragons all have a unified look across colors, instead of being completely different from each other like the ones in the old 3rd Edition Monster Manual. I think, however, that your creature anatomy could use improvement.

Most of the wing claws are unsupported, just floating in the sails. The legs have almost no muscle mass - particularly in the hips, where strength would be especially needed. The torsos look emaciated, with very little room for internal organs or abdominal muscles. The chests are reasonably bulky; but the flight muscles, which would basically be huge, broad pecs connecting the wings to the keelbone, are absent. (This is particularly evident on the silver dragon: the foreleg shoulders are heavily muscled, but the wing shoulders are not. There's a prominent keel, but there are no flight muscles attached to it. The body below the chest looks like a snake, with nothing to securely anchor the legs - the pelvis, if there is one, is way too small to support the leg muscles.)

Some good points: I like that the wing sails extend to the hips, so the animal can keep its spine horizontal in flight. Also, the necks and tails are well-muscled and strong, although they look out of place with the emaciated torso connecting them.

"But dragons are imaginary; what does it matter if they're realistic?" It's a question of believability. No one has ever seen a dragon, but we have cats, dogs, lizards, snakes, bats, and birds to use as references (and everything else, of course; but most dragons in Western fantasy seem to be based on some combination of those animals). Even without studying anatomy, most people can tell when something looks *wrong* - even if they can't quite articulate why.

Your colors and detail work are gorgeous. Take some time to work on your basics of anatomy, and your art will be stunning :)

I was wondering, may I use some of your artwork on dragons as examples for a character/ some characters in a fanfiction that I'm writing? I'll link it back here and give you credit, I swear. And I love your drawings, btw, especially how you color in the light reflecting of the scales.

Quite welcome. All of your dragons are beautifully well-done! I am trying to create a unique fantasy world to write stories in and for others to possibly be allowed to write in, too. Out of curiosity, I was wondering - if I ever manage to finish that - would you be open to letting me use some of your dragon artwork as the basis of some of the dragons there? The Dragons in my setting would be small compared to most settings, though - vertically not taller, standing up on all fours, than like 9-13 feet tall. Small dragons, rather than the giant ones that require an army of tens of thousands to beat.

Holy cow... *is speechless*
Awesome dragon! Funny, this guy is about the same proportionly as my green and blue one, save the wings. You should do more of these creatures.^^

And dream come true, I do believe I've found a Weta Workshop member. Yes? Who else is here? Big LOTR fan asking this.

Beautiful rendering and color.
Do you lay down your shadows first?

:iconbenwootten:

Hard to say, shadows and highlights describe the form, I would say that I genrally lay down the darked tone first and build the form with highlighs. Then more shadow if it nedds the weight.

ah, I see. Do you usually go black and white/grey tones then add color on top?
