Functional elegance. Getting a design or look that look like it will do the job it's supposed to do, That's the tricky part.

I mean yea some ships look great, works of art, flowing lines, great visual appeal. But a nice solid, "I'll kick yer but across this system" design I can really sink my teeth into.

I think that if you think about the function of the craft/creature and it's parts then the design will follow. Form follows function, easy!

Okay, it just doesn't look much like a painting. Also, the top left one? Is that an empress class cruiser from Mass Effect?

It is a mix of painting and textures and existing ref, when I am designing I am a lot less choosy about how I get the job done than when I am illustrating, two very different jobs. I am not familiar with Mass Effect so the appearance of the two ships is a coincidence I guess, will have to look the other ship up and check it out.
